Today In History: Jomo Kenyatta returns to Kenya from exile

#TodayInHistory

September 10, 1961: Jomo Kenyatta returns to Kenya from exile, during which he had been elected president of the Kenya African National Union.

Kenyatta was exiled by the British, who had colonised the indigenous tribes of Kenya.

Colonial authorities released Kenyatta after nearly nine years of imprisonment and detention. Kenya achieved independence two years later, and Kenyatta became the first prime minister of the country.
