MY HISTORY, YOUR HISTORY, A NATIONAL HISTORY

We have become ignorant of our history. We have grown to learn not to remember the past. How can a man exist without knowing who he is? How can a society evolve without a past? How can a nation solve it’s structural problems when there’s no love for History.

How can we understand what we’ve grown not to remember.

We don’t know who we were and that is why we are where we are.

I don’t want to live in the shadows anymore. I don’t want to remain in the dark any longer. I don’t want to exist without knowing my past. My history, Your history, a National history.

We were born a Freeman but with an enslaved mind. We grew to hate one another. We created empires to destroy them at the end. We fought, captured, bought, sold and enslaved one another. We started slavery.

We blame the Europeans for our woes. We curse them for our calamity. We despise them for the scars that have grown too deep and has taken hold. We loathe them for enslaving and lynching us at home.

Our ignorance has caused us not to remember that Owu War, Kiriji War, Ijaye War, Oyo led Invasion was fought by us. We took ourselves as slaves, offered and traded one another among ourselves.

The hatred, division and inhumane acts towards one another invited the Europeans to easily come and trade in slaves.

Yes, we were emaciated. Yes, we sailed naked along the shores of the Atlantic. Yes, we were tortured, exploited, lynched, enslaved and forced to work on their plantations. Yes, what they did was terrible but what we did was shocking. We sold one another to the Europeans for a box of matches, wine, sweets and medals.

When blaming the Europeans for slavery, always remember that there was a “Trans-Saharan Slavery” before a “Trans-Atlantic Slavery”. We started the fire of slavery and we were burnt with the fire.

We started Slavery. We gave them the chance to exploit us. We gave them the chance to colonise us. We allowed to them make choices for us. We gave them the clue to cement the division and hatred. We made ourselves dependent. We enslaved ourselves.

The only solution to whatever name has been given to our various problems is ” We“. We are the only one to end what we started. We are the only one that can find a lasting solution to our problems.

We can only solve what we understand. Until we grow to remember our history, understand our history, learn from our history, we will continue to struggle with our future. The Past, Present and Future are interwoven.

Let’s learn from the mistakes of the past, stand and grow to become a better Nation that we desire.

God bless Nigeria. Nigeria will be great again.
