Fire razes shops in Gowon Estate, Lagos

A large fire this morning destroyed five of eight shops close to a Union Bank building in Gowon Estate, Federal Housing Authority, Egbeda.

Eye Witnesses say that the fire started at the provisional shops around 11.20 pm shortly after electricity supply became unavailable.

However, the youth in the area were able to control the fire from spreading before the men of the Lagos State Fire Service arrived at the scene.

The residents and sympathisers decried the sale of areas designated for the construction of fire service stations by Federal Housing Authority (FHA) while called on the state government to install water hydrants and fire notices all over the estate.

Some leaders in the estate lauded the efforts of the residents, including the youth in containing the fire before the arrival of the men of the fire service who eventually quenched the raging fire.

The cause of the fire has not been identified at the time of filing this report.
