Home renovation plan ‘supported 30,000 Jobs’

A home renovation scheme described as a “boon for the construction industry” should serve as inspiration for the Government to introduce a bigger stimulus to generate house building, an industry leader has said. Construction Industry Federation (CIF) southern regional director Conor O’Connell said the Home Renovation Incentive scheme had achieved what it set out to do since 2013, and its success could be replicated in a national house-building incentive project. The Home Renovation Incentive scheme was introduced in 2013 as a measure to assist homeowners and contractors after the…

Papa, where were you? when we Trekked to school; no sandals nor shoes

PAPA WHERE WERE YOU (To all run-away Fathers)   For the years we were fed with hunger And starved with food, For the years we celebrated Christmas With mere white rice Having no single touch of stew Papa, where were you?   Where were you when for miles We trekked to school, Paraded the coal mines Barefooted; no sandals nor shoes   My uniforms were worn out New ones mama couldn’t brew My classmates ditched out Threads of mockery, and made me a spool It was unbearable So…

I have confidence in me because I was formed out of love

I HAVE CONFIDENCE IN ME   Out of sentiments and familiarity My confidence and trust I laid on you With trust that all I am and will be All is safe with you That you are rock enough to hide me From the stormy waves of challenges But all was just in my head   It didn’t take a prophet to tell me That all was wishful thinking Your words as sharp as blades  Cut through my confidence and trust Left it all tattered shreds My flaws and…

Fiction: The Peace the Crown Stole

The peace the crown stole, he wore like a medal; a reward for the hard years. He hadn’t a care in the world who offered it as long as he had it. It was the most valuable thing he had next to his mental capacity which he discovered was larger than he was made to believe by people around, by himself. Before he died he had called me and told me his life’s tale and as he did; he looked up at the paintings of Jesus and his disciples at…

Poem: Where we live, we keep on celebrating Thieves

DECADENCE   Where we live We keep on celebrating thieves, Applaud them as our heroes past Even crown them Chiefs   The land in which we live is one of ironies The minister for health runs overseas In attempt to stitch his broken ribs. In our pharmacies poisons are sold Cheaper than medicines, Medicines costlier than gold   “Decadence, This is the situation we’ve found ourselves Where lecturers are always on strike, Yet they claim Our graduates are half baked. Permit me to ask, Do breads bake themselves?”   Decadence,…

His eyes are shining with love and desire for you. You Of all people!

THIS V WORD As an art mart, Instagram, healthily counterbalancing its nartcissistic tradition of writers & emergency poets being entrapped in the bermuda triangle of love, loss & longing, also features as a near-pyrrhic reward, artists who somewhat arrived late at the initiation rites. Worthy of note is the realisation almost all of literature, and by consequence, life, is hooked on this thematic trifecta, but the intellectual aesthetic of the poetic microcosm has it that the witty-but-shitty, the pretty-but-petty reigns sovereign, posing the champagne problem between artists(your guess is as…

Poem: Who says being Female is equal to being Weak

THE F-WORD, FEMALE I am female The vast population has structured me as frail Typical of me to unveil Continuously portray and act juvenile Putting up displays of being helpless With arms all thrown up in flail I am female That means I am typically opposite of male Every slightest discomfort makes me wail And probably everyone assumes My acts are old wives tale Naturally am prone to blackmail I am female Treated differently by different races But amidst their labels I remain most sought beautiful creation I represent the…

Discipline Series: PART IV Financial Discipline

DISCIPLINE SERIES: PART IV FINANCIAL DISCIPLINE   This has to do with the way one spends. The question to ask yourself here is:  (1) How do you spend? (2) What do you buy? (3) Why must you buy? Before a person can spend you need to have a scale of preference. A scale of preference is the arrangement of things according to its importance. Before you buy anything, you should have a list of what you want to buy stating clearly the purpose for the spending. Having the scale of…

Mama invested Everything in you but you still failed her

MAMA SAID Mama had lost her husband years ago immediately you were born. You lost your two siblings to an unknown disease that broke out in your small community, but God singled you out. Mama suffered, shuffling between taking care of you and hunting for people to get money from in order to send you to the Community Primary School. During the rainy season, mama always stood and watched you sleep, because every other place in the hut was leaking. In the morning, she was always the first person…

Nonfiction: Empty Barrels Get Filled Too

“I wish you could see what I can see in you and love it all the way I do. – Self-esteem” -Natasha Dubalia   As humans, we have the tendency to impress, prove wrong and in the process prove our worth. We crave to be wanted, admired and accepted. God forbid it goes the other way. A lot of times, we are so eager to please, prove to the world that they are wrong. We are not what they say we are; we are not empty barrels. Forgetting the fact…
